Firstly my apologies for those of you who have been visiting the site looking for my next post. Whatever this zombie plague is, its hit me hard and left me like a zombie, higher thinking and writing more than a few Facebook posts has been all but impossible for the last few weeks and despite struggling I have only managed a few posts. So my apologies for anyone I have let down by not being here. This post is a bit short and not as nice as usual, I haven't eaten any brains today. I’m not going to cover the actual election, that has been done to death elsewhere, instead I’m looking at the future or perhaps the past. It’s hard to tell if our society is going forwards or backwards these days. “We must end the idea that as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone” Wow. What a statement. What tyrant spoke these words, which third world national leader uttered something so chilling and filled with menace. The very concept of this sentence, just because you haven’t broken the law you should not feel safe. Tremble in fear because the Law is no longer a guide to what you can or cannot do. We must end the idea, the concept, the thought, the public perception that the Law is the limit to what can or cannot be done, that the letter or spirit of the Law is the restriction, that those who obey the law have done no wrong. We must end that idea. Obey the law, follow the rules. Is that not the point of laws, to set limits on what can or cannot be done. To set restrictions on individuals or groups in order to protect the collective whole, the population, the people and the nation. The law is both a restriction AND a protection because the Law says what you can do as well as what you cannot. By knowing what the law says you must not do you become aware of what you are allowed to do and the reverse. Our Laws set the limits for unacceptable activity but at the same time also state what is acceptable activity. We obey the laws because they ar for the benefit of society as a whole, we know that and because of our laws we know what we can do and so we do it. We will leave you alone. We, the government, will leave you alone. What does that mean, we will not spy on you perhaps, we will not read your emails or listen to your phone calls, we will not constrain your rights, we will allow you to live your life and talk to your friends. We will not arrest you or censor you or silence you, torture or imprison you, harras or intimidate you or in any way seek to restrict you life and the freedoms you enjoy as someone living in a first world western nation that claims to be civilised. “We must end the idea that as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone” The third world dictator has spoken, the police state is swinging into action. Obeying the law will no longer protect you from the state. Just because you think you are allowed to do something, just because it is NOT against the law, just because you have never been told that what you do is wrong, that won’t save you from state harassment or arrest. Just because you have not broken the law you have no right to sleep safely, the law becomes meaningless when the state can take action against you even though you have obeyed every law. The rule of terror, the knock on the door in the night and the glimpse out the window at the men in the black uniforms or the leather trench coats. Something from an old war film or something tomorrow. I am fully aware that the stated intent of this legislation is to deal with Islamic extremists, to shut them down and to silence them. Something it will NOT achieve since it will only cover the UK, only full blown internet censorship and blocking access to non approved sites or sites outside of the UK will stop the Islamic web sites, propaganda and recruitment. Silencing the hate preachers in the mosques can be done under existing laws but never has been, political correctness has always prevented any direct action. So why this new legislation. Because it is not aimed at Islam despite the dear leader and his followers referring to Islamic extremists. This is aimed at rebellion; this is aimed at those who are called extremist because they oppose government policies and action, not because they follow a sky fairy. Remember the last time this came up, animal rights, political activists, they were included as being possible extremists. Today the occupy movement, anti austerity activists, just about anyone who is vocal in opposing the government and its policies can be called an extremist and even if they have done nothing to break the law they will still be subject to action against them by their own government. Why not change the law so people are actually aware that what they are doing is illegal and will be punished, why not change the law to make it clear where the limits are. Instead of telling people that the law is no longer a limit or a protection. Instead of deliberately creating the mentality that says we can no longer rely on the protection of the law and we no longer know what is a crime why not modify existing laws. Instead of making people into criminals even though they have broken no laws and weakening the very concept of laws as restrictions and guidelines why not change what laws we have? Once you weaken the law because people no longer need to break the law to become a criminal and no longer have the protection of the law to rely on then you destroy the very concept of a law abiding society. “We must end the idea that as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone” I don’t know about the rest of you but I find that one sentence chilling |

Well it changes one thing - it is a very good rebuttal to all those idiots who say - "If you've done nothing wrong, you've got nothing to be afraid of" because clearly the government are now saying, even if you've done nothing wrong (against the law) you should still be afraid.
