With the inevitability of a slow motion train crash we watched as we drew close to the moment of impact. The runaway train about to hit the car that is stalled on the tracks and the car driver, a chap called Dave, standing there shouting stop stop but no one was listening. I do not think there was ever any possibility of stopping the selection of Jean-Claude Juncker to head the European Commission. He is the right man for the right job at the right time as far as the EU sees it. Europe has staggered through the problems of the last few years. The EUcrats have managed to ignore the fact that they caused many of those problems, they survived and in their minds that makes them right and every nay sayer wrong. The great Federal Stats Europa is steaming full speed ahead after bouncing off one Iceberg and ignoring the many other floating ice mountains ahead. The FSE is unsinkable and unstoppable and anyone who says otherwise is a fool in the eyes of the EU rulers. Titanic, never heard of it. The EU is pushing its way east, they have just signed agreements with the Ukraine, the first of many many documents that will rob the people of the Ukraine of what little freedom and independence they currently have as a nation state. The Kiev government has several options, they can sign away their own authority and become another Mediterranean style subject state, they can choose to not implement many of the more restrictive rules in order to protect their own sovereignty and economy or they can become like the UK and half heartedly rail against the every growing EU authority will privately signing ever single new rule into Law. Unfortunately for Kiev and the people of the Ukraine they have only one realistic option and that is to become little more than a vassal state of the EU. They are now dependant on EU cash to keep their own economy afloat. Cameron has done his duty at the dyke and it failed and flooded anyway. But in the process he revealed something interesting. There is absolutely no possibility that Germany or the EUcrats will ever do anything to reduce their own power. Germany’s economic power is based on the EU being a vast market for German goods without internal tariffs. Turkeys voting for Christmas comes to mind. An ever closer union means ever greater central control and an ever smaller possibility that any nation or that annoying thing called democracy would be allowed to get in the way. No nation or vote will be allowed to rock the boat of federality. To be honest I doubt Cameron wants to either. All three of our main parties and far too many of our Political classes talk the talk but fail to walk the walk when it comes to Europe, they may play to the genuine concerns that people have but very few of our politicians make any real effort to reduce the power of the EU over us. The EU has been allowed to grow government after government. Getting it out will be complex as it is entangled throughout our legal and economic systems. But like any parasite it has grown to the point where it threatens the host, it needs to keep expanding and spreading or it will choke its host to death. Also like any successful parasite it will not let the host get rid of it. It does this by politics. By making our political class pro EU and denying any realistic anti EU politicians power. Politicians crave power like vampires crave blood and will not easily give that up. So the EU will continue to grow and feast and every so often we will see little shows like this one, token gestures of opposition. Next year Dave is up for re-election. I’m sure that we will hear a lot of concern from him about the EU and the growth of the all controlling federal super state. He will continue to repeat his referendum promise, to be held AFTER he is re-elected of course. In the end nothing will change and he will come up with more excuses or he will be seen to be defeated by the mass ranks of EUrocrats. Those who talk about staying in the EU are full of doom and gloom should we leave, three million jobs lost was the last I heard. That’s a lot of jobs. But why is it we always hear about the bad stuff that will happen if we leave, why do we so seldom hear about the good stuff we get from saying. A cynical person (which I am) would say that the Pro EU camp has trouble finding good things to say. Still three million jobs. But given that we buy more from the EU than we sell to the EU how many million jobs will Europe lose if we go, four million, five million? Who can say? But then we don’t buy or sell to Europe, we don’t do business with the EU. We do business IN the EU but we buy and sell in Germany and France and Spain and Italy. We trade with nations, we could do that long before the all powerful EU mutated from an open market into a wanabee Federal Superstate. And we can trade with nations long after the EU is nothing more than a footnote in history, an advisory note about how the lust for power inevitably turns into a tyranny and that Politicians who forget that they come to power through democracy will inevitably weaken and destroy democracy. Empires fail and fall in one of three ways. They fall to Military or Militancy action, they fall economically or they fall due to democracy or the will of the masses. Historically the length of time an Empire lasts has been shrinking as the ability to communicate has been growing. Four hundred years used to be a good length of time, but as technology has replaced horses as the way messages are carried this time has shrunk. What is it now, forty years perhaps? The EU is running out of time, its end could be just ahead. But the problem is that by destroying any ability for Democracy to bring down the EU they have left two possibilities. The Euro could still collapse and bring down Europe, the collapse of China would bring down the world economy and collapse the Euro like a house of cards. Or there is military action or militancy either internal or external. As more and more tyrannical efforts are used to suppress the population you simply deny people the ability to peacefully protest and they turn to other means. Britain and France are no strangers to having an out of touch undemocratic and Elitist class of rulers overthrown by violence. When you remove peoples power to speak or shout or vote all they have left is violence. When you try to bind the economies of widely divergent economies together and force them to act in lockstep you create a system that may seem strong but that is riddled with weakness, something that will fall apart when hit hard enough. Dave talked a good fight but he didn’t walk a good fight, he put on a show for the plebs. If enough of our MPs could be bothered to support the UK over the EU a single act of parliament could shut the whole stinking mess down by removing the ability of the EU to pass laws that affect the UK. But that will never happen because our politicians want power not democracy. They need their next fix of blood and money no matter who has to suffer to keep them in power. Dave was putting on a show, his lips are moving and sound is coming out so he is lying. Our politicians will not oppose the EU. Business as usual, move along you proles, none of your concern. |
