its state.
This is a modern scientific version of the old idea that if a tree falls in the forest and no
one is close enough to hear it then does it make a sound.
Schrödinger was a physicist who envisaged an experiment to demonstrate this. He said
take a cat, put it in a box, add poison that should kill the cat and then close and seal
the box. Now the cat should be dead, the poison should have killed it. But the last time
the cat was seen it was alive. So sealed in the box the cat is both alive and dead and will
not become one or the other until someone opens the box.
This brings me to God.
Do you believe in God people say? Is Jesus part of your life people ask?
Have you heard the word say the Jehovah’s who keeping coming round looking for
another half hour debate on how their beliefs do not withstand scrutiny. I am sure they
go away, reread their books and speak to others to find some sort of answers for me to
take apart on their next visit.
He exists, he does not exist. Theists say that he/she/it exists. Atheists say he/she/it does
not exist.
But the funny thing is that not one Theist or Atheist can actually give me a clear and
definitive description of what God is. Millions of people absolutely convinced that they
are right and yet none of them can actually say what it is they are right about. The
most common response is that God is, well, God. Lives in heaven, divine, father of Jesus,
big on miracles. Or that God doesn’t exist so it doesn’t matter what he/she/it is.
In science the absence of a positive does not prove a negative. It simply demonstrates
that you cannot prove the positive. This is something Professor Dawkins is all too often
guilty of. Saying that a Theists inability to prove God exists makes his case that God does
not is bad science.
The Higgs boson is a fine example of this. Until a year ago there did not exist a shred
of evidence that it existed and yet otherwise sensible men of science believed that it
was real. Their faith in the God particle kept them going until they could prove it really
did exist.
So does God exist, does God not exist? Is God Schrödinger’s cat?
I consider myself to be a man of Intelligence and Education. A man of logic and reason.
A man of science. I remain open minded as to the existence/non existence of God or Gods.
I am happy to be convinced by either side as to the rightness of their case.
All I ask is that they provide proof that is able to withstand rigorous and repeated scientific
analysis.
