Last night I went to bed as the first few regions were declaring their votes. This morning I woke to find the votes counted and the official confirmation of the figures. The leave campaign won seventeen million votes, the stay campaign managed sixteen million, the leave campaign won and so we are now looking into a less certain future than we did when we woke yesterday morning. To use a nautical turn of phrase, we are now sailing into unexplored waters. Over the course of the morning Dave has given his press conference and declared he will stand down by the Tory conference, which is in October, so we will have a new Tory leader by Christmas, a little faster than I expected but not outside of expectations, he was always going to go (or be pushed out), it was just a matter of how quickly. So Dave is done for and in all likelihood Osborne will be right behind him. We have also heard from many of the vote leave people, Farage was grinning so much he may need medical help for lockjaw, others are being more careful in claiming things have changed though they are universal in saying things will be better, at some point. Boris was full of praise for Dave, the Boris minions were spouting glowing praise of Boris and mutterings of people stepping up for the big chair in No 10 are spreading. Social media is full of shocked people, upset by the results and fearful of the future. Many friends are worried, many are watching the markets or the pound or the reports that we have dropped from fifth largest world economy to sixth in the space of an hour. The pound has dropped to a thirty year low, big British institutions have suffered massive market losses, Barclay's dropping by more than a quarter and many others doing worse. Doom and gloom and tax haven living traders are rubbing their hands with glee as they count their profits. But did you know that nothing has changed. Yep, the sun that rose this morning did so over a country that was the same as the day before and will be the same tomorrow. Nothing has changed, nothing. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Yes I do mean that. Yes I know the markets are falling, the pound has plunged, walls are bleeding and cats and dogs are living together. I know the most likely new PM is Boris with Gove and IDS in senior positions. I know Scotland and Northern Ireland are talking about seceding if the UK leaves the EU. But nothing has changed. Not a thing, the same people who had jobs yesterday still have them today, the people without jobs yesterday don’t have them today. Our industry and manufacturing (such as it is) is the same as it was on Thursday. Our service sector is still there, nothing real has changed. AND NOTHING WILL CHANGE FOR AT LEAST TWO YEARS ! Nothing, not a thing. No laws, no limits on immigration, we will remain a member of the EU and be bound by those laws for at least two years and probably for years after that. The leave campaigners themselves are being very clear that they will NOT be invoking article 50 immediately and will, instead be putting into place the right government to handle the matter. That’s political speak for “we won and now we are giving ourselves the nice jobs”. The markets are already recovering, idiots and money grabbing manipulators have had their fun, traders will be grabbing shares that have dropped so much and will be making a nice profit when (and it is WHEN) those shares go back to normal. Because the magical money system may be bouncing up and down but nothing else has changed and will not change for years. Those companies have the same assets and are doing the same business. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. Everything you see happening is the result of people either panicking or taking advantage of other people panicking. The sun will rise tomorrow morning, the world hasn’t ended. Please don’t panic, please don’t hate those who voted for the other side, nothing will change for years and I fully believe that the ‘negotiations’ that will take place prior to invoking the actual leave will take a year or three. There may not even be an EU to leave as we return to a trade block rather than a Federal super state. But the prices in the shops will rise only because of profiteering and price gouging by the supermarkets, things tomorrow will be the same as they are today. Next week will be like last week and next year will be like last year. We have had six years of a Tory government using fear and hatred to create division and we are now seeing the Bitter Fruit that is the result of that, please don’t give in to the fear and hatred now, the vote has been counted but nothing will change for years to come and maybe not even then. Don’t do the Tories job for them. Please stop with the “End of the World” meme, nothing has changed, not a thing. The future is a little less certain than it was but for the vast majority of people in this country the future was never that certain to begin with, not under the rule of our political class. One final thing: Now the voting is done don't blame those who voted either way, instead point your fingers of guilt at those who spent three months spreading fear and hatred, three months of lies and deceptions, three months of treating people like fools. So be nice to your friends no matter how they voted, be magnanimous in victory or in defeat and remember, no matter what happens, we were led to this and those that did the leading carry the blame, not those who were led. |
