For those who don't recognise the title, I'll explain it later in this post.
Several months ago we as a nation went out in the rain or the sunshine to cast our votes on a very important referendum on our membership of the European Union. This followed a campaign where both sides used fear as the main method of making their case, the Leave people used fear about what the EU was and is and could be, the Remain people lined up to talk about the utter disaster life outside the EU would be. Few people actually tried to highlight the benefits of their side and those who did were mostly lost in the shouts of fear and hate.
We all know the result of that, just over a hundred days ago the votes were counted. And we were leaving. Brexit was happening. Though here we are more than three months later and we still don't actually know what Brexit means since every time anyone asks all we are told is:
BREXIT MEANS BREXIT.
Which tells us fuck all if you will excuse my language, not had enough coffee this morning.
Still we are beginning to see what it will mean as our Tory government slowly tells us about this change or that change and the picture gradually emerges.
It's odd saying that after the Tory conference. Our Tory Government. Is it? Is it still our Tory Government? It's still our government but is it Tory, because it's looking a lot like a UKIP or Britain First government, Even UKIP are complaining that Glorious Leader May and her minions have stolen the entire UKIP policies list.
In reply to a Facebook post I said Nigel Farage seems to have won, he didn't make UKIP into a government, he turned the government into UKIP.
Though that's something of a disservice to UKIP since the Tories have adopted every bad idea and are clearly ignoring the areas of policy such as protection of the NHS where UKIP had strong views. The Tories have taken the nasty party idea and gone even further to the right while ignoring or dropping anything which was actually good for the people of this country.
Brexit, whatever it is, doesn't have to be bad, it could be a great thing for the country, if, and that's a big IF, you can trust the government to sort an arrangement that is good for the people of the country rather than just a few corporations. Trust May, right now, I don't.
GO HOME OR FACE ARREST!
This was the slogan on a van driving around the streets of Britain, aimed at illegal immigrants, aimed at those in Britain without the governments permission, undocumented aliens, non citizens. Foreigners.
People from the Eu or the rest of the world, people not allowed to be here, people taking jobs from British workers, people driving wages down, criminals. Foreigners.
Go hone or be arrested, you are criminals and the police will deal with you unless you bugger off back to whatever country you came from.
1964. National Election campaign poster, several hundred were printed by the National Socialist party of the time who were fully supporting the Conservatives and their policies.
This one wasn't published by the actual Tory party, it does however clearly show the sort of thinking they were putting forward.
This one however IS from the Tories.
Smethwick, 1964. The Tory campaign run in this constituency was and still is regarded as one of the most racist every run in the UK.
Tory MP Peter Harry Steve Griffiths won the seat!
This was a Tory political campaign, run by Tories, for Tories. 1964 was a different time, many years ago, social and cultural ideas were different.
But still, this was official Tory campaigning.
Long ago but still in living memory for many of us. How far we have come since then, no longer judging people on the colour of their skin, or where they came from. Old news, ancient history, the bad old days of discrimination.
British Jobs For British Workers.
OK I'm kidding myself here, 1964 isn't so long ago. British jobs for British workers, British Landlords to check all tenants, banks to run regular checks on anyone with a bank account, companies to list and publish any employees who are Foreigners. Doctors and nurses who are from some other country to be phased out and sent home, to be replaced by British people, people who aren't foreigners come over here to steal jobs from British people who can't or won't accept massive debts training for a medical career because the government stopped all support for such training and allowed the universities to charge tens of thousands of pounds for the courses.
EU citizens to be sent home unless they can be used to get some useful bargain in the negotiations, non EU citizens to be kicked out. Any and all Foreigners, not wanted here.
But how do you tell if someone is a foreigner, how do you know that the people who walk passed on the street are good British citizens or some dirty foreigner over here taking jobs from good British people. The people you work with, are they foreigners, should you report them to your employer or to the police. How do you know.
Look and Listen, it's as simple as that. Look at them, listen to them.
Is their skin too dark, what about their hair, their eyes, the shape of the nose or lips. Are they pasty pink, sun brunt white folks, or are they darker than that?
Do they dress strangely, do they show any sign of a non christian religion?
Do they have a foreign accent, do they misuse English words or not understand them? Do they sound Foreign.
If in Doubt, call the police on 999.
Ridiculous isn't it, in Britain in the 21st century. Or is it?
Religious discrimination in schools is back, our own government has taken right after right from us while telling us it is for our own good. For months, before the vote and after, we have been told that the foreigner, the outsider is a danger to us, to our jobs and our children. Our media is filled with stories of Asians and Muslims who are Terrorists and Child Abusers while at the same time forgetting that this government is covering up the same crimes carried out by good British citizens.
The Tories have taken every bad point and idea UKIP, the SNP and Britain First ever had while throwing away any good points they may have supported. It's like steps going down toward some dark and terrible dystopian future. Step by step into the depths. Clegg and the Coalition. Cameron and the fully Tory government. Now Glorious Leader May and another step down, another lurch off toward fascism and totalitarianism.
It comes to something when Farage would make a more moderate PM than the one we currently have.
The title, oh yes.
In 1968 a TORY MP gave a speech in response to the Labour government of the day bringing in a piece of legislation, the Race Relations act, making it illegal to refuse housing, employment or public services to people because of their ethnic background. The MP in question was a member of the Tory shadow cabinet though he was sacked from that post soon afterwards because his racist views were too extreme for the party to accept. Since he had been given a seat on the Shadow Cabinet his views must have been acceptable before he gave the speech so perhaps he was sacked because of media attention rather than his actual views.
