It will be biblical disaster:
Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years
of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes. The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice,
dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
The UK is a European nation, its geography; we are right next to them.
The volume of trade between us is worth a huge amount of money, Europe can no
more do without trade to the UK than the UK can drop all trade with Europe.
The issue is not with trading or geography, it is with economics and a lack of
democratic accountability. The Euro is a basket case currency and has almost no
chance of surviving in its current form. The economies of Europe, the Mediterranean
nations and the eastern nations are so diverse that a single currency fixed to suit one
part of Europe will be unsuitable to the rest.
At present the Euro suits the northern block and is crippling the med nations. Changing
the Euro to save the southern nations would smash German competitiveness
on the world markets.
Political pride is ignoring this little detail and the result is Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ireland,
Italy and the way things are going France. A blind eye was turned toward the financial
situations of some of these nations to let them in and now that they cannot function
within the Euro they are being locked in to prevent the grand project fracturing.
To survive the Euro must either become the currency of a handful of northern nations
which would suit the UK or it needs to be a currency for the much weaker Mediterranean
nations and the powerful industrial nations of the north create their own joint currency.
The UK has no part of the Euro in its current form and unless we get a government of utterly
stupidly suicidal economic idiots we would seem to be unlikely to join. But don't rule it out
altogether, as a nation we have no shortage of Idiots in politics.
The second problem is the lack of democracy and democratic accountability. The EU has gone
far beyond a European trade zone and market without borders to the point where unelected
euro bureaucrats seem to be setting national laws that elected governments seem powerless to
resist.
There is little accountability or transparency within the EU. Vast sums of money flow into the
EU every year but it is all but impossible to account for it, the EUs own auditors refuse year after
year to sign off on audits they know are not accurate.
Britain in Europe as part of a trade alliance is a great thing, buying and selling across Europe without
the restrictions of borders or trade limits brings massive benefits and a great many UK companies
and jobs would be lost if Trade to the EU went back to individual countries and trade tariffs.
However there is a vast difference between the old EU, a common market of nations and the current
EU, a corrupt and unaccountable regime lacking democratic accountability.
The nations of Europe are not going to stop trading with the UK because the UK is distancing itself
from Brussels, trade will go on and I suspect that a deal of real politic will be employed to ensure
that the common market will continue even if the UK pulls out of the EU.
Still it’s not going to happen. The UK provides far too big a chunk of cash that keeps the EU afloat.
If the UK government ever pushes hard enough Germany will step in and negotiate to ensure
that the Euro sceptics are happy, that democracy can be seen to be maintained, that UK laws are
decided where they should be decided, in Parliament, and not in the offices of Brussels and most
importantly of all that the UK continues to fund the corrupt gravy train that is the EU.
The fear in the US and now Japan is not that the UK would suffer if it left the EU. The real fear is that
the EU would not survive if the UK walked away.
